great quotes on peace

When I studied peace and conflict I learned a lot about key peace theories like analyzing structural and cultural violence. While this was challenging at first, I got the hang of it and began to develop my ability to recognize structural and cultural violence everywhere (my blog post on how to recognize types of violence HERE).

But recognizing these forms of violence is not enough. We have to know approaches to transform them, to build peace. War and violent conflict are complex, but there are many ways to transform them. We learn some in the the field of Peace Studies, but I know from my experiences that there are so many ways to transform the world.

One great way of finding creative ways to transform structural and cultural violence, to build peace, is to analyze what wise people say about it. So I have put together this little collection of great quotes on peace and appraoches for building peace to help you. From these we can gain a deeper understanding of what real peace means and find creative ways we can build peace.

Key messages about peace and approaches to build peace in the quotes

I think there are two ways that these quotes can help you find ways to contribute to building peace in the world around you. One is by recognizing key messages about peace conveyed, and the other is be understanding different approaches to build peace demonstrated by these quotes and finding a way that is most suitable for you to build peace from these.

Key messages about peace

  • War cannot bring about lasting peace; it only leads to more conflict, war, and inequality.
  • True peace can only be achieved through non-violent means.
  • Militarization and the accumulation of weapons prevent peace, as societies that invest in armed forces and war economies hinder peaceful coexistence.
  • War affects all nations, and international cooperation is essential for peace that benefits all of humanity.

Key approaches for building peace learned from these quotes:

  • Use education, including peace education, to change mindsets and teach non-violent conflict resolution.
  • Address essential human needs—like food, shelter, healthcare, and education—especially for those who have suffered, as peace must be tangible and meaningful.
  • Promote sustainable management and fair distribution of resources to reduce inequality and support global peace.
  • Use the arts and other creative mediums as tools for fostering understanding, dialogue, and peace.
  • Develop systems that prioritize peace, social justice, and the common good, and challenge structures that perpetuate war and conflict.
  • Encourage a mindset of empathy, where peace is achieved by acknowledging our common humanity and working toward mutual benefit.

They explain that the idea that war brings peace is not correct despite what leaders may say. They emphasize that the seed of war is in our minds, and only through uprooting false ideas about war will we actually achieve peace.

“To suggest that war can prevent war is a base play on words and a despicable form of warmongering. The objective of any who sincerely believe in peace clearly must be to exhaust every honorable recourse in the effort to save the peace. The world has had ample evidence that war begets only conditions that beget further war.” – Ralph Bunche (Diplomat, activist, mediator, 1904 – 1971, USA)
